Church and Civil Society Groups' Synodality Against CORRUPTION and IMPUNITY
Cardinal Pablo Virgilio "Ambo" David
TRUTH OVER POWER: The CBCP's Moral Call for Justice Under Law
In a political landscape often clouded by spectacle, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has issued a vital, principled call to the nation: True justice is fought for in court, not merely on social media.
Responding to the explosive allegations made by former lawmaker Zaldy Co—claiming President Marcos Jr. and former Speaker Romualdez ordered the insertion of ₱100 billion into the 2025 budget—the CBCP has sounded a moral alarm. Their warning is dual: we must be vigilant against corruption, but also against the political exploitation of truth itself.
The Danger of Weaponizing Truth
The Bishops are not dismissing the seriousness of the claims; they are defending the integrity of the search for truth. They caution that the timing and nature of these allegations suggest a perilous attempt to use grave issues as mere weapons to inflame public anger or manipulate political outcomes.
“This is not justice. This is propaganda. And it is dangerous,” the CBCP implicitly warns.
When serious claims are released at moments designed to stir public anger or manipulate political cycles, the truth risks being transformed into a tool of deception, not a pillar of accountability. The Filipino people deserve clarity and integrity, not half-truths timed for maximum political gain.
Discernment and Due Process
Our laws demand due process. Our faith demands integrity. And our democracy demands discernment.
The CBCP stands firm in reminding us that the search for accountability must adhere strictly to the Rule of Law. We must reject any attempt to turn a serious legal matter into a political spectacle designed to serve hidden agendas.
We must demand that all parties involved demonstrate honesty and courage, present verifiable evidence under oath, and stop using the pursuit of justice as a “political chess game” where the goal is power, not truth.
The CBCP’s voice is a powerful reminder: We must not allow ourselves to be used as pawns. We must demand full investigations, not just viral headlines. Our democracy is strengthened only when we seek the Rule of Law, not the Rule of Political Drama.
Let us speak, act, and discern with both courage and clarity.
